Garage Door Preventive Maintenance Tips

lubricate garage door hingelubricate garage doorScott here from everydayhandyman.com. I thought I would share a couple tips with you. For the last several months our garage door has started to make a lot of squeaking noises, so I decided to lube all the joints and the bearings and the connections, and try that out which worked out good.

There is three different styles of hinges and rollers on this door and here’s one of them. What I did was I just sprayed some, what’s called ‘Move it’. It’s a penetrating lubricating oil in here.

You can use WD-40 or any kind of stuff like that. I’m not a big fan of WD-40. It seems to evaporate quickly. So this stuff is a thicker liquid. You just spray it in the joints.

Here’s another type of bearing. So what I did was I just sprayed the penetrating oil right in here and right down in here and along this little shaft here. Then the same on this side in here, the best you can, and then around garage door maintenance tipshere. This is the roller bearing, so this is what’s got some ball bearings in there. So I sprayed some in there as well.

Here’s the other kind of bearing. So I used the same stuff and sprayed in here, sprayed in here, and sprayed in there and all around the black roller bearing. What I did after that, I opened up the door several times and then it still made a little bit of a squeaking sound, so I gave the hinges and rollers another spray and then the sound went away.

This is the stuff I used. It’s called ‘Moovit.’ I know there’s lots of different kinds out there likemoovit lubricating sprayWD-40 works, but I don’t really like that. It seems to evaporate quickly, so I just use this stuff and it’s worked over the years. But, if you’ve got some WD-40 around, there’s no reason why you can’t use that.

There wasn’t very many, but I definitely had some shop towels or used some shop towels because this is a thick liquid so you want to wipe it off the door after you spray it. I also used this half-inch wrench, or 13mm wrench to tighten the bolts on the hinges that attach the hinges to the door.

This is something you might want to think about. This is called a bit of preventive maintenance, even though it had started to squeak, it’s a good idea to do this at least once or twice a year. But it’s also (if you don’t really know what you’re doing) a good idea to call a garage door expert, who services garage doors, to come in and give you a hand. There is a few heavy-duty springs and things like that so this is something you should get some professional help with.
